John leads the Firm’s commercial law practice and advises on contentious and transactional matters.
He is a well-known litigator having over 20 years’ experience representing clients in litigation and arbitration in various fora, both at a local and international level. His experience includes representation of clients in all Courts and Tribunals in Malta, the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice. He regularly represents clients in arbitrations brought under the rules of the ICC, UNCITRAL, ICSID, the LCIA and the LMAA and has been involved in several disputes involving the enforcement of Arbitral Awards.
He acts in complex disputes which often require coordinated action in different jurisdictions. Usually this would involve elements of insolvency, shareholders’ rights, joint ventures, fraud or asset tracing. John is also regularly involved in building, marine and insurance disputes, many of which have an international element.
John also advises on non-contentious and transactional matters including in relation to joint ventures and shareholders’ agreements, business reorganisations, mergers and acquisitions, competition, real estate development projects and employment.
Clients include businesses operating in the manufacturing, hospitality, construction, insurance, transport and services industries as well as family businesses, company shareholders and directors. His clients in arbitration have included foreign State actors as well as state owned entities involved in transportation, mineral extraction and foreign direct investment.
John graduated as a lawyer from the University of Malta in 1996 and was admitted to the Bar the following year. He is a member of the International Bar Association, the Malta Maritime Law Association and the ShipArrested.com community.
